The textbook materials provided by KCP were very helpful and I also enjoyed the way Kanji was taught in the classroom.

Tyler from Summer Short 2016

Which events or activities did you find the most satisfying and why?

Really enjoyed the bus trip to Yamanashi Prefecture not only for the fun of the excursion but also for the great experience of trying out unique things in Japan that you normally wouldn't be able to, like Zazen and peach farm visits. It would be great to have more excursions like this that can also make us utilize our Japanese.

What were the most productive and interesting aspects of the program for you? The least interesting and productive?

The most productive and interesting aspects of the program were those that involved unique Japanese cultural experiences and excursions outside the classroom, such as the tea ceremony and the bus trip to Yamanashi. These allowed us to have an immersive Japanese experience while utilizing our Japanese. The least productive experience for me was the speech contest. While it was fun and provided the opportunity for students to practice Japanese, I believe it took up a lot of valuable time during the short summer session that could have been spent on more learning in the classroom.

What activities or materials did you find most helpful (e.g., pair work, drill practice, tests, small group sessions, textbooks, games)?

The textbook materials provided by KCP were very helpful and I also enjoyed the way Kanji was taught in the classroom.

Where did you live?

Ikebukuro Dormitory

Were you pleased with the general living arrangements? Anything you especially liked? Any problems you experienced?

The Ikebukuro Dorms were amazing. Great location with super market and 7-Eleven nearby and not far from the metro and school. The dorm manager, Gantan-san, was very helpful and nice. The dorm was homey and in a more relaxed, residential area of Tokyo.

Any further thoughts or tips for those considering the program or new KCP students?

Prepare to learn a lot but also have a lot of fun. Don't be afraid to reach out to support staff at KCP because all the staff were super friendly and helpful.

Testimonials

If you want a challenge, then this program in definitely what you’re looking for. I came into the program with very basic knowledge of Japanese and am definitely excited about how much I have improved. Learning a language isn’t instant and it takes a while to sink in, but the longer you’re here you become more motivated to utilize what you learn and to continue to progress in your studies. And all of the instructors and office staff are some of the most friendly and approachable people I have ever met. They really make the whole experience quite enjoyable!
