Apps to Try for Learning Japanese

There are several language learning apps to try to learn the Japanese language while at home or on the go. It is a great way to jump start your learning experience as well as familiarize yourself with the Japanese language. Check out some apps to try:

Duolingo – is one of the more popular free language learning apps. Duolingo’s approach is to use bite-size lessons to make learning feel more like a game than learning from a textbook. Their methodology is said to be proven for fostering long-term retention when learning a language. Their curriculum is also aligned to international standards. Learners advance from different exposure to a language through experiences such as interactive stories, podcasts and events.

Memriseis a language learning app that claims to be opposite of textbook learning.  They have a team of in-house linguists that add to learning through video clips of native speakers speaking in their own language, in their own hometown. This allows learners to understand authentic pronunciations, accents and taking in the scenery and sense of culture of the particular language being learned.

Pimsleur – the method used was developed by Dr. Paul Pimsleur (1927-1976), an accomplished academic who received his Ph.D. from Columbia University and a highly respected linguist. The courses focus on oral language learning using three key principles:

Graduated Interval Recall –  This is based on optimal spacing for information to move from short-term into long-term, or permanent, memory.

Principle of Anticipation – By systematically asking for understanding, pausing for a response, and then reinforcing the correct response, Pimsleur courses accelerate learning, increase understanding, and activate new neural pathways in the learner’s brain.

Core Vocabulary – Effective communication in any language depends on mastery of a relatively limited number of words and structures.

Lingodeer – this app’s methodology teaches by emphasizing grammar alongside vocabulary to help you fully master a chosen language. Lingodeer teaches by having learners understand the relationships between vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation and sentence structure, and tying them all together. Japanese is practiced by completing different types of exercises.

Busuu – the language courses on Busuu is developed using the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR), an internationally recognised standard for creating language lessons. These lessens are divided into six stages that range from complete beginner to completely fluent. Busuu courses cover the first four stages of the CEFR, from A1 to B2 level. There are vocabulary and grammar practice through short, self-paced study exercises. The users can also get feedback from native speakers.

There are several ways to take advantage of the time at home and put it to good use by improving your Japanese skills. See more here.
