The teachers speak slowly and clearly with simple terminology to ensure you understand enough to do the learning. This can get difficult at times but it’s easy to ask what something means if you get a little lost or confused. This made my listening skills improve dramatically.

I really enjoyed getting to speak with teachers outside of class during the annual school event. It was a great way to practice my Japanese speaking ability.

I really enjoyed the Sports Day and seeing the sakura at Shinjuku Gyoen. I think they were great opportunities to get closer with my teachers and other students. I also really enjoyed participating in the Hanazono Matsuri.

I really enjoyed 運動会 and the cultural excursions. I felt like they gave a great insight into Japanese culture that I wouldn’t be able to get otherwise.

At first, I was not enthused as team events with people I don’t know can be stressful. However, I am so glad I participated! It ended up being very fun to cheer for my team.

The curriculum can be challenging, but you can do it. Talk to the teachers, make flash cards for kanji and review your quizzes and content as best you can. It’ll pay off.

I found being able to just sit down and chat with the many teachers and other students during break times to be both incredibly interesting and a great chance to work on my own language abilities.

Pair work is extremely helpful because everybody has different conversation styles and knows different words so it’s a constant improvement.

Make lots of new friends and utilize your time in Japan to become as familiar with the culture as you can and have new and exciting experiences every day.

For grammar, hearing explanations in class was most helpful. Otherwise, the kanji textbook was very helpful for self-study at home.
